10 Ways to Practice Kindness in Everyday Life (That Cost Nothing!)

Kindness shouldn’t have a price tag – it should be given without the need to receive in return. Especially when the world around us seems quite unkind, it’s up to us to practice kindness as often as we can, in as many creative ways as we can think of. Here are a few ideas for random acts of kindness that can work wonders in helping you and the people around you feel the love…

1. Smile at a stranger 😊

This might feel a bit strange or awkward at first, especially if you’re not accustomed to doing this on a daily basis. Once you make it a habit though, it’s a really nice feeling to see how your smile can make the people around you smile right back.

2. Pick up a piece of rubbish and put it in the bin 🚯

It might feel like a waste of time, but picking up a single piece of rubbish may just save the life of a bird or animal that doesn’t know the difference between a piece of plastic and a tasty meal.

3. Show patience 🧘

Waiting in line at the grocery store or being put on hold during a lengthy phone call can really test our nerves when we’re feeling busy and overwhelmed, but taking a moment to stop and breathe before yelling or reacting in anger is a great way to be kind to ourselves and the people we’re dealing with.

4. Let someone merge when driving in traffic 🚗

Another situation that can really test our patience is driving in heavy traffic. Instead of getting lost in road rage, turn your music up, listen to a podcast, or play eye spy with the kids…and maybe let a stranger merge in front of you – we’re all in the same boat (or car, in this case).

5. Send a ‘just checking in’ message to a friend 🤗

Who knows, today might be the day that a friend could really use a kind message to let them know someone is thinking of them…that someone could be you!

6. Bring in your neighbour’s bins 🗑️

It’s a small act that takes very little effort, especially when you’re bringing your own bins in at the same time anyway. Who knows, they may return the favour one day.

7. Donate those books you’ve finished reading and don’t plan on reading again 📚

If you’re a book lover, you know just how costly books can be. By donating or giving away any books sitting idly on your shelf that you don’t plan on re-reading, you can give other people the opportunity to enjoy them as much as you did, without the expensive price tag.

8. Give someone a genuine compliment 🥰

This is one of our favourites because it means actually slowing down to notice something about the person you’re interacting with. Maybe they’ve put effort into trying out a new hairstyle, or they brought you a morning coffee. Instead of just saying, “I like your hair” or “Thanks for the coffee”, you could try giving them a more meaningful compliment like, “It looks like you put a lot of effort into your hair, I love the style on you” or “I really appreciate that you thought to bring me a coffee, you’re very kind and I love that about you”.

9. Offer your time to help a charity 🤲

Look into local charities in your area and reach out to see if they’re looking for volunteers. You could also donate if you have more capacity to give financially than with your time.

10. Leave a kind review for a local business ⭐

It doesn’t take much to make the day of a small business owner. Your positive review could be the difference between them making a sale or gaining a new client. Your kind words are worth more than you may think.

Hopefully we’ve left you with a few good ideas for how to practice kindness in your everyday life. Have a fabulous day and feel free to share this post if you enjoyed reading it 😊
