The holiday season is almost upon us, so we figured we’d put together a little guide to help people support disadvantaged members of their local communities around this time of year. Whether you celebrate Christmas, a different holiday, or nothing at all, this is a perfect opportunity to come together in the spirit of giving to offer kindness and make a meaningful impact to the lives of those who need it most. Here are our suggestions for where your kindness can make a real difference…
1. Encourage friends and family to donate instead of buying gifts
Next time a loved one asks you what you’d like for Christmas, let them know you’d love for them to make a donation in your name. Let’s face it, the world is overflowing with ‘stuff’ and ‘things’ that often see one or two usages before being discarded. The more meaningful gifts we can include in our celebrations to help people who need them, the better!
2. Donate essential and heartwarming items
Consider offering donations to a trusted local charity (like ProjectKindness) of non-perishable food, clothing, home necessities, baby items, or toiletries. You can also add some holiday cheer with kids toys, books, festive decorations, and other items that will help make people smile when they may not have received gifts otherwise. By providing these types of items, you’re giving both comfort and joy to those who need it most.

3. Spread awareness and kindness
Sometimes, helping isn’t just about donating, it’s also about raising awareness and making someone’s day just a little bit better. Share information about local charities, fundraising events, or volunteer opportunities on social media or via word of mouth within your networks. Encouraging others to get involved multiplies the impact and creates a stronger sense of community. Spread some random acts of kindness as you go – smile at a stranger, bring your neighbours bins in, pick some flowers for someone you know is going through a tough time – the world is your oyster when it comes to being kind!
